In 1824, the grounds of McKean Memorial Park were originally given to General Lafayette by the United States Government. He was given ten square miles of land in McKean County, which is now named Lafayette Township, where the McKean Memorial Park is located. In later years, the property was owned by the M. B. Goff family who used it for farming. The McKean Memorial Park board of directors bought the 101-acre farm land and broke ground for the cemetery April 22, 1936. They started by selling 335 six grave lots, totaling $50,400 to help with the construction of the grounds. They developed the roads, planted 140 trees, evergreens, shrubs, and flowers. During the cemetery’s development, famous American architect, Walter J. Hall, designed the beautiful stone entrance, singing tower, and chapel. Along with assisting in the layout of burial sections throughout the Park. The chapel was used for funeral services until it was turned into the administration building & amp; office in 2019. The Myrl Scott family helped with the ground breaking and development of the Park, Myrl Scott helped operate it until his retirement, and his son, Ned Scott took over. Ned was accompanied in management with his sister, Marie Chase. Alan Scott, grandson to Myrl, was the last of the Scott family to run the Park until it sold on March 31, 2021 to Mark and Cassy Platko. The Myrl Scott Family were the owners from 1936 until 2021. The founders originated the Park on a non-sectarian basis, so those from every walk of life could have the option of being buried here. Today, McKean Memorial Park is the final resting place for over 10,000 of our communities' loved ones.

Cemetery vs Memorial Park
What is a Memorial Park?
A Memorial Park is modern “Park” type cemetery. The most noticeable difference is that memorial parks use dignified sculpted bronze markers lying flat on landscaped lots to memorialize a grave. This allows visitors to enjoy the beautifully manicured garden style grounds without distractions. The concept of a memorial park is to provide visitors with an atmosphere of natural beauty in a park like setting.
